Human Urine Parasite Screen
18S Amplicon Sequencing for Urinary Eukaryotic Pathogen Detection
The PathOID.ai Human Urine Parasite Screen uses 18S ribosomal RNA amplicon sequencing to identify eukaryotic parasites and fungi present in the urinary tract. Sequencing reads are classified against a curated reference database of nearly 500,000 18S rRNA sequences spanning 33 eukaryotic phyla, developed specifically for eukaryotic pathogen detection.
Why urine: The urinary tract is a primary site of infection for several eukaryotic organisms with serious long term health implications. Schistosoma haematobium, a blood fluke transmitted through freshwater exposure, is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is directly linked to squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder through chronic inflammatory damage to the bladder wall. Urinary Trichomonas vaginalis infection is among the most prevalent sexually transmitted parasitic infections worldwide and is frequently asymptomatic. Fungal organisms including Candida species are common urinary tract colonizers that standard urine culture may undercharacterize at the species level.
Organisms targeted include: Schistosoma haematobium, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida species, Aspergillus species, Cryptococcus species, and hundreds of additional eukaryotic organisms across 33 phyla.
Accepted Sample Type: Midstream urine (home collection kit included)
